TOPIC: HYPNOTISM Many years ago, I took a training in Ericksonian Hypnosis. During the training, I volunteered to be taught self-hypnosis. I was too much of a control freak to volunteer to let the leader hypnotize me. I was also skeptical about the process and from my current place on the Down Hill Slope can admit I was also afraid it might give the trainer power over me. It worked and I became a convert. Hypnosis and self hypnosis as the article explains is a useful tool.
Two quotes from the article:That observed brain effect is greater in the 10% to 15% people who are “highly suggestible” to hypnosis. About 30% of people are resistant—particularly those who are deeply skeptical. Experts also urge patients to be wary of exaggerated claims that hypnosis can “cure” alcoholism or depression or medical problems, “or that promise to uncover your long-repressed alien abduction,” says Dr. Montgomery.
The article also makes the point anyone can call themselves a hypnotist, just anyone can claim to a psychotherapist or a coach. So beware, best to go to someone who has a license to practice therapy from their state. The letters LCSW after my name were bestowed by New York State in honor of my graduate degree and six years of practice under someone with a therapists license. Even then, one should be a bit wary.
Most believe no can make you do what you do not want to do. But we can be induced to do things against our own self-interest if part of our being wants either to please the hypnotist or wants us to do something our conscious self would not do. When I teach self-hypnosis, the first thing I do is build safety walls. Mainly, I remind the person that all hypnosis is in the long run self-hypnosis and that we must always protect ourselves from another persons suggestions by affirming that the person must stay aware of the need to only do what their conscious self approves of. Usually works.
But much advertizing uses hypnotic devices–flashing lights, rhythmic music, repeated phrases, repeated images, charismatic leaders. Forewarned is hopeful forearmed.
STAYING STRONG TIP You can begin learning how to use modified self-hypnosis by learning to combine taking a calming breathe, visualizing a place you find relaxing and repeating a short slogan. My Be With Beauty Exercises is a good example. So here is a sample, picture and all:
Breathe in, focus, hold, stay focused, breathe out, smile, and say “Ahhhhh” or thank you.
Substitute any calming picture, replace the words with the word “Relaxing,” then practice twenty or thirty times a day and in time you will relax more and more. Warning, you must practice when you are already somewhat relaxed, otherwise tension will win out.
