Who doesn’t want to be happy? Remember this, however, the push to “Be Happy” is mainly an advertising ploy that works too well in our consumer society.
Laugh and Play is one of Emotional Fitness Training’s Daily Twelve Exercises. Remember What Matters is also one of the Daily Twelve and far more important one. As Davies suggests “plucking treasures” from unhappiness attunes more with the realities of life.
EMOTIONAL FITNESS EXERCISE
Experiment with being grateful all day today. Practicing gratitude is another of the Daily Twelve. Instead of pursuing happiness, spend today saying Thank You. Thank those who deserve thanking, but also thank those who pain and hurt.
Emily Dickinson says “The wounded deer jumps highest.” Pain provides better life lessons than happiness. Stub you toe? Thank your carelessness for reminding you to be more careful. Berated by someone else’s rudeness? Thank them for reminding you, you are kinder and more caring.
You do not have to thank the rude and obnoxious outloud. In fact, not responding at all is probably best. You can, however, thank them in your heart. Looking at them with raised eyebrows or a soft face - face calm, eyebrows smooth, mouth gently smiling as if looking at a much loved sleeping baby. Soft face soothes you and confuses angry or rude people.
Life is a struggle, full of hurt. Some hurt from acts of evil, some from the randomness of nature. Relationships also bring pain, but without caring connections life is bleak. Expecting happiness is unrealistic, as Alice Walker notes it is better to “live frugally on surprise.
