Take a break from spending on you and yours. Spend part of your break time money for those in greater need. Sandy means many have forgotten Haiti. Don’t let that be you.
Kara is a lovely young woman, privileged to be raised in the USA, and aware of her privilege. She does more than most to repay all she has been given. With the help of her parents, she started The Haiti Initiative which has finally received not for profit status so gifts can be deducted. Instead of planning to spend gobs on a fancy vacation why not plan to volunteer, if not with Kara’s group, some other group needs your time and support.
Emotional Fitness Tips about Giving During a Break
I have thought about starting some giving posts every since Giving Tuesday. Thought of the Twelve days of Christmas, Eight Days of Hanukkah, Seven Days of Kwanzaa.
That we need to be reminded to give is sad and diminishes us. Sharing and Caring should be part of every day life. But income tax time is coming and if you haven’t given so you can get that refund, now is the time to think about doing so. Now until the end of the year, I will be featuring some of my favorite charities as well as those that have been suggested to me.
It has always caught my heart that the people who give the most are the people who have the least. Not because they give more, but because their giving reduces the quality of their life. Ten dollars given when it means less food for your family is giving at its best. So here are some of my thoughts and tips.
Tip one: Give money. Give to the beggars on the street, at your religious organization. Give to those no one else will give to. Give to those everyone gives to, but give money.
Tip two: Give of yourself. Volunteer, but also give of yourself informally. Baby sit for a harried parent. Take someone without a car shopping. Shop for an invalid. Visit the lonely. Write letters of kindness to others. Donate Blood.
Tip three: Do not worry if your giving seems unappreciated. At some level it always is. Shame and false pride , however, make it hard for some to be gracious when accepting help.
Tip four: Give support. We all crave acknowledgement. Besides my selfish interests this is one of the reasons I ask you to remember to like, comment, or share on social media. Few do and it takes so little. I am not talking about the likes on my stuff.
Life is hard and economic times have made it harder, and made many less giving. Be one who counters that trend. You will be the better for giving. and so will the world. Kindness is always repaid.
